boxer running off

Question
I have the almost the same question as the previous person. I have a 16 month old female boxer who is spayed and knows all of her basic commands, we have leash laws so she is always on her leash. except when moving her from the house to the yard. If she can get away she will run off like it is a game,( I mean she takes off) she won't let me catch her but will walk up tp a total stranger. That's the only way I can get her back, unless she gets tierd and just comes back home. How do I get her to come back.

Answer
Hi Angela,

Even though we all like to give our dogs a bit of freedom now and again, if a dog isn't 100% on recall (come) they should not be permitted off the leash.  Period.

She's not running off like it's a game...it IS a game.  Because you don't say, I can only assume that you chase after her...which does indeed turn it into play.  A dog should never be chased outside of play time for just this reason.

You need to be smarter than your dog (which you are).  There's no reason she needs to be off lead to go from the house to the yard.  Again, you don't say, but I'm assuming you have some type of fence or tie out for her?  She gets NO freedom until her recall is 100%.

You can also turn running into a game (in a secured area) by getting her to chase you.  Instead of running after her, run away.  Recall should be practiced twice a day for about 10 minutes at a time.  If you need to know how to teach recall, let me know.

There's no magic that will make her come back if she's already learned the fun game of run and chase.  You need to practice recall daily and not let her off lead until she's, again, 100%.
