Question
QUESTION: My 4 month old boxer has had vaginal discharge for over 4 weeks now. The vet first gave her a liquid antibiotic and that didn't work, then they gave her the same antibiotic in pill form and that didn't work, so now she is on a different antibiotic and I have not seen any change. The vet I take her to has several different doctors who have seen her and one of them said that she may have this problem till she is about six months old. I was wandering if this is normal for young females?

ANSWER: No, it is not normal.

You didn't say the appearance of the discharge... clear, milky, bloody?

It could be a bladder infection, or as unusual as a first heat. But I doubt that.

One of the vets should take a swab of the vaginal area, getting a swab of the discharge and examine it under a microscope. That will identify the bacteria or lack of.

A particular antibiotic aimed at bladder/urinary infections should have been given, and I don;t know what antibiotics they gave her to know if this was covered.

Consider changing vets-- call around and talk to vet assistants about your problem and see which vet will take a swabbing and get a diagnosis and stop the guessing games.

It is not normal at that young age.  It is a symptom of a problem.

It could be her food too. Only feed her an all natural puppy food without corn, corn gluten and soys. Google and research and select one- or go to Pet Smart and read labels and select one.

Add 1/2 cup whole plain yogurt to her puppy food once a day. This helps with urinary problems, and also aids in digestive tract.... (no flavored yogurt- plain only)

QUESTION: She has a yellowish milky discharge and the food I have her on is Blue Buffalo puppy formula and I give her a spoon full of Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Rice canned food to the dry food. The antibiotics that has been given to her is Clavamox,Penicillin, and now Lincocin. They also gave me some methigel.

Answer
The food you feed her is excellent. Add the yogurt as well for awhile, then whenever you want.

The penicillin should have done the job. Clavamox is excellent broad spectrum as well. I don't know anything about Lincocin or methigel.

They need to do a culture.
