6 month old female jumping

Question
Hi!  I have a 5 1/2 month old female boxer (Gypsy Lou) and for the most part she has been an absolute gem!  She was house broken in one weekend, never touches a shoe left on the floor by my son, never chews on the furniture and has learned most of the basic commands (sit, stay, lay down).  She is an absolute treat to be around, with one exception.  I cannot break her of jumping up on people or children when she sees them.  No matter if she is alone for 6 hours or 10 minutes, she automatically jumps up on people when she sees them.  It has become more of a problem because she is now quite strong and weighs almost as much as my 5 year old son. She can very easily knock him down.  I have tried generally telling her "no" and pushing her down, gently putting my knee on her chest when she gets up, holding her paws together when she jumps up, but nothing seems to affect her much.  Any ideas of how to break her of this habit?  I know she's young, but I'd rather her not jump up on people or children when she reaches her full weight and height!  Thanks tons

Answer
Hi Nikki,

It's getting worse because for 5 months she's been getting attention every time she performs the behavior.  Pushing her down is starting a wrestling game, putting your knee to her chest can cause broken ribs, and holding her paws together is only playing.

When she jumps, fold your arms, turn your back and ignore her until she calms down.  Don't talk to her, don't touch her and don't look at her.  If you do this every time, consistently, you'll eventually see her stop jumping.

Consistency is the key.  She's taken 5 months to develop this habit, it's not going to be fixed in a week.
