Question
We have 2 boxers and a mix beagle husky.  We have rescued 5 boxers over the past 25 years so we know boxers.  We have Max, approx. 9 yrs old and just rescued Steve approx. 13 months old.  Steve loves the beagle husky mix(Roscoe)and for most part seems to love Max. Max has been with us 7 years, Steve 3 weeks. The first few days it was great it was like Steve had been with us for months.  Now it is not so good. Steve keeps attacking Max.  Max is not trying to dominate, he is not trying to make Steve submissive.  My husband has always been the pack leader so Max is confused but he is fighting back.  We purchased a Kennel for Steve when he is bad.  The problem is there is no warning no eye contact no ears back no indication there is going to be a fight just all of the sudden Steve jumps him.  Now Max is acting scared to death and I don't blame him but I know we can not "oh poor puppy" him or he will continue to act that way.  Max is major concern and we don't want to give up on Steve, we think that is part of what is wrong with him.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer
You rescued Steve, the 13 month old and probably do not know his history, but obviously he did not have any kind of socialization what so ever.

This is a big problem now that he is older.

You are going to have to teach him what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

Buy a whistle.

Get a leash and collar ready and handy.

Each time Steve does something unacceptable, blow the whistle and leash him immediately.

Put him in his crate for a time-out and only use it for this. You cannot use a crate for good and for bad-- it has to be associated with one or the other or it won't work.

Try that for awhile and get back with me.
