Aggressive Pound Dog

Question
Hi Nicole.  We adopted a boxer mix from the pound a few days ago.  She is about 3 years old and for the most part is very well behaved.  We know little about her previous home(s?) and we don't know much about the breed as our families have always had goldens or springers.  So far, she's been sweet and friendly to everyone she's met and she tolerates our 2 year old's (sometimes intense) love very well.
The problem is other dogs.  Our experience is limited, but she has been aggressive with a couple of the dogs she's met.  She's been OK with others.  It doesn't seem to be a male or female thing.
My question is this:  What can we do to make sure fighting isn't a problem for her?  Do you think we should get her into training right away or could it just be her adjusting to a new family and we should give it some time before spending money on class?  Is there anything we should avoid doing that might cause her to become more aggressive?
Any advice would be appreciated.  We just want to make her comfortable and happy and to help her find her place in our home.
Thank you for your time!

Answer
Hi Ashley,

I would suggest a behaviorist rather than an obedience class right now.  This really has nothing to do with settling in...more likely that she wasn't socialized properly by her previous owner(s).

Because this is a behavior that you are unfamiliar with, and a dog that you don't know well, a canine behaviorist would be the way to go.  They will assess her in person and be able to give you tools to help her.

Your vet should be able to give you referrals :)
