discharge from female

Question
My female boxer will be 3 at the end of January. Over Christmas she had a heat cycle and I took her to a breeder to breed her. She spent two days with the male. We know he tried but we are not sure if they got a tie, because we both had to work. They were in a kennel outside and my female is never left outside in the cold or rain. Well day 1 was cold and snowy and day 2 was freezing rain. She had a cold for a few days and she got better. Now that her heat cycle is over she has a white milky like discharge. Is this something I should be concerned about? Should I take her to the vet? Or is this normal after breeding? Thanks for your help.

Answer
A slight creamy discharge is not uncommon, but if it's more than a drop or two, if it smells, if it is bloody or green-tinged, or if goes on for more than a few days, she should see the vet as it could be an infection.

For future reference, I'd caution against just leaving dogs together unattended to breed.  While certainly thousands of dogs manage just fine, there are a number of opportunities for injury to the dog or the bitch, sometimes severe.  It's far better for them to have supervision, and help or intervention if necessary.  (Also, if I'd paid a stud fee, I'd want to know for sure that they'd bred, and also that some neighborhood stray didn't get to her - dogs can and do breed through fences!)

Good luck.
