Question
I have a 5 month old boxer male and i can't get him to stop using the bathroom in my floor. if it was just pee i wouldn't be so upset about it. he will do great for about a week then he does it all over again. i have him cage trained and i can leave my house for 5 to 6 hours and he will be ok and not use the bathroom in it but then when im home i can let him outside and he will be out there for 5 or 10 minutes and come in and as soon as i step out of the room he will poop in his cage or in the floor. i will scrub everything to kill the smell and the germs but he still does it. after he does it i will put his nose to it and say bad boy and put him out side. im at a loss as what to do about it. i don't want my family to get sick because of it and i know u can no matter how much i clean up after him.

Answer
First, never, ever put their nose in it and scold! This is telling him that eliminating is a bad thing-- no wonder he has problems. He now thinks that peeing and pooping is wrong- period.

First, you cage him 5-6 hours. This is not good for a 5 month old. I would check into other arrangements for that care. Possibly a puppy proof room, or if caged- someone ( a pet sitter) to come let him out to pee and play during that time.

Puppies cannot hold their bladder (or poop) for any longer than a couple of hours. It becomes longer as they reach adult age. So, caging him for 5-6 hours is not humane for a puppy that cannot hold his bladder.

When he does, he has to go so badly that when you let him out he does go, however, he can do it again inside the house because he is too excited for getting out of the cage and also seeing you (from being lonely and confined that long- as they think you will not come back for them and are abandoned) that he will continue and go again or continue where he left off outside (maybe pee outside then poop inside)...........

Every time he does it inside, do not scold him. Simply say "potty outside" and stick to one command- not varying any command and cue for outside : then take him outside and stand out and wait for him and watch. If he does pee or poop outside- praise him "good boy" and pet him, all in an upbeat and happy tone of voice.
Give him a treat. Call the treats "treat" so you can always say "let's get a treat" or "treat" and he will learn exactly what that is.

Soon with the taking him outside after an accident, and the treat and praise reward, he'll learn that going outside means love and treats-- a good and positive thing- and inside means going outside- he'll make the connection.

Also, peeing and pooping inside the house often is a sign of rebellion meaning they are rebelling because of being caged so long. And, at his age- extreme excitement...

Five months old is like a 1 year old baby-- younger actually.

You must think of him as an infant- not a dog in order to train and handle him properly and effectively.
