Question
QUESTION: I have a 4 yr old boxer female who started making grinding noises this past October. By December she was vomiting and diarrhea. Her stomach is always making noises. She has had blood-work,which showed mild pancreatis, a full body x-ray,ultra sound and many different medicines to no avail. At this time she has been on chicken and rice for 5 months. I have tried adding a wheat free diet but the second she eats dog food the symptoms get worst. Any ideas?

ANSWER: She obviously has a sensitive stomach and chicken and rice is alright- but be sure there are no corn and glutens added. All natural without additives is best for her.

Also, try the sweet potato blend which is best for stomach issues and allergies too.

Give her the sweet potato blend alternating with the chicken and rice or blend the two later when symptoms improve.

Give her whole, plain yogurt (no flavors) with food and as a snack. Yogurt has good bacteria which aids in digestion and improves digestive tracts and health.

Do not give her any "dog food" other than the chicken and rice, sweet potato and rice, lamb and rice- and no corn, no glutens-- no additives.

Keep watch on her poop and make sure she doesn't get constipated or have loose stools.

Baby Pediolyte (generic alright but NO g\flavors-- clear only) is good to keep her electrolytes high.

If she is over weight or under weight- have her checked for thyroid disorder and diabetes.

QUESTION: Hi Jannie and thanks for responding. Yogurt is a no go. It just made the diarrhea worst. No thyroid or diabetes. No tumors or blockage. Just a beautiful little girl who can't eat dog food. Even on chicken and rice her stools are loose. The good news is that her weight is only down by 1 pound. Can you recommend a vitamin as a supplement? Do you know of any other boxers with this condition. She is on 10mgs of Pepcid 2xs aday. I know when she is making the grinding noise that she is in pain:( Thanks for any info you may have.

Answer
I am wanting to know what the vet has said about this condition.

No, I haven't come across this before.

I wouldn't dare recommend any vitamin supplement with her problem. This needs to be discussed with her treating vet to make sure it does good and not harm.

If this vet has not gotten to the bottom of the condition, I would seek a second opinion. Have the medical records and tests results faxed or sent to another vet for a second opinion. Maybe a gastric specialist.
