Boxers red eyes

19 15:51:03

Question
My boxer is 2 years old.  His eyes have always been kinda red. Sometimes they are more red than others. When I last took him to the vet, which was in July, he asked me if it's normal for his eyes to be red.  I told him yes and he didn't seem too worried. He just said some boxers eyes are like that. But I noticed in the last couple days they seem extra red. Is it true that some boxers eyes are that way?

Answer
If you are talking about red under the eye on the bottom lid-- it is called "third eye." Don't ask me why-- but that is its technical name.

It is normal. Some Boxers have one eye that is red (third eye) and some have both, and some have none.

If you are talking about the whites of his eyes being red, and is more red sometimes than other times-- that is an indication of environmental allergies.

Does anyone smoke in the household? Is there a lot of trees and foliage in the yard or nearby?

Environmental allergies are like our sinus and hay fever allergies.

Talk to your vet about the proper dosage of Benadryl for him. Benadry (measured by cc's in a dropper and squirted in his mouth) helps to relieve allergies.

Ask your vet if there is an allergy medication (pills) that you can give him to see if it clears up and keeps his allergies under control.

Also, it could be a combination of environmental allergies and food allergies.

Make sure the food you feed him does NOT contain corn and corn gluten.
This would be a natural dog food. Google "natural dog food" and you'll come up with a lot of hits. Find one that does NOT contain corn and corn gluten and that you can purchase locally and inexpensively.

His eyes will clear up in no time.

(Boxers are very sensitive to corn products, and tend to be more allergic to foods and environmental elements than other breeds)
