How much should my puppy be eating?

Question
Hi Nicole,

I have a 10 week old male puppy named Griffin... He is just adorable but I am worried he is not eating enough... He seems very thin to me (we only got him 2 days ago) and I was wondering if there is a way to put some weight on him sooner rather than later... I have an appointment with the vet this week but I wantd to see if there was something I could do in the mean time or going forward...

Thanks in advace for your advice!

Answer
Hi Bridget,

Congratulations on your new puppy!  Griffin is a GREAT name!!

It's hard to say how much he should be eating w/out seeing him.  I know you're looking for advice but waiting until you take him to the vet is what I would suggest.

Are you feeding him the same food the breeder was?  Has he been wormed?

If you aren't familiar with Boxer puppies, they do tend to grow a bit differently than other breeds.  They start off chunky (as all puppies do) but quickly get somewhat thin.  The first year they can seem to be a bit bony because they're growing up instead of out.  The second year is spent growing out.  :)

If you're feeding a bagged food, stick with the recommendation on the back of the bag for his age.  At his age, he shouldn't necessarily be a specific weight but his weight should be appropriate for his build.  His vet will be able to tell you if he's the proper size.

Americans tend to have the fattest dogs.  (Same as we tend to be the fattest people).  Keep in mind that an overweight dog is not healthy and an overweight puppy is just as bad.  You don't want him to have health problems later on.  If the vet says he's good, he's good.  ;)

If you have some digital photos, I'd be happy to look at them.  From the side and from the top (looking down at his back) would be best.  ngendics@oh.rr.com
