Boxers and Cancer

My family and I love Boxers. We have had two over the years and they have supplied much joy!! However, we lost our first Boxer shortly after she turned 8 and we just recently lost our second boxer after she just turned 6. Both passed because of cancer, the first it got into her bones and the second it took over her body and wasn't diagnosed until she started having diarrhea for a couple of weeks and started to retain fluids and looked bloated. So, while we love the breed and cannot really imagine not getting another Boxer you can imagine that we are somewhat hesitant about the overall health of this breed. Can you comment on Boxers and cancer and make any suggestions we should consider when looking at finding our next Boxer puppy? Also we have fed both dogs Natural Life dog food, any concerns with that?

Whatever dog food you choose- pick an organic, all natural one with no corn, no glutens and no additives.

Boxers are more prone to cancer than some breeds- but not all Boxers get cancer. You have had horrible luck and lost your beloved Boxers.

I am so sorry for you and your losses.

Don't let that discourage you though. Pick a reputable Boxer breeder that tests the parents and pups. You will know that their genetics have been cancer-free.

You will pay more- but you will have a happy, healthy, long-living Boxer.
