QuestionWe just brought home our white boxer from the pound! The pound says he is 2 yrs old. However, when we took him to the vet they said that he could be 5 yrs old. How can you tell? My boxer's teeth are underdeveloped - they are tiny in the front - not sure if they are worn down or not fully developed.....but he is 68 pounds and perfectly healthy. Just wondering how you can tell the age of a male boxer other then by the teeth?
AnswerIt's hard to tell the age of a Boxer even from the teeth; the front teeth are often small, and Boxers tend to have gum overgrowth which makes the teeth look even smaller. The back teeth are a better indication, but even then a poor diet will make them look older than they really are. You might look at his body structure; most male Boxers are just starting to fill out and get rib spring at two years old, whereas a five year old would be at his peak condition - however some lines do mature much faster so that wouldn't be any kind of guarantee.
I'd say you'd be best off splitting the difference and calling him 3.5 years old. :)
