Boxer Dog Hair Loss

Question
Hi Angela,

We have 9 yr old female boxer approx. 60 lbs. that appears to have an abnormal amount of hair loss for this time of year.  She is being fed an all natural dry dog food (Canidae) and has been now for about 1 year. I also brush her on a regular basis (1x or 2x per week) Is there an additive that I should be looking at to give her with her food that will help with this.
I also find that when dealing with the Vets here that they seem to push 'Science Diet' dog food and when push comes to shove they really are not too knowledgeable about diet or brands of dog food.
Is there something that you can suggest or recommend.
I would rather not walk out with a expensive bag of Science Diet and a large invoice including consultation.
Thanks.
Gary

Answer
Hi Gary,
Thanks so much for your question. I personally give my boxers a homemade diet and NuVet Supplements on a regular basis now except when traveling we use Timber Wolf Organics. We are trying to feed as near to a natural canine diet as possible plus adding the supplements so we don't have to measure every little vitamin and mineral for their diets. Here is a link for dietary information I have on my website which can help you become better informed on commercial dog foods and other dietary information http://www.hitowerboxers.com/boxerfood.htm . The Nuvet supplements are not sold in stores and we are very please with them, the dogs love them and are given as a treat once daily. Since starting these supplements years ago we haven't experienced any coat problems. There is a link to their site as well on the link above, if you go on autoship you can save 15% off and they have a 100% money back guarantee as well. I'd try it for 90 days for your own boxer. If you notice any spots, patches or areas of hairloss then you should have your boxer checked by the vet for mites. If a change in diet and these supplements doesn't help then I would also have her thyroid function checked as well. Good luck with your beloved boxer and thanks again for your question.
