Boxer Allergies/Scratching

Question
Our 9 month old boxer puppy has had extreme itching/irritation in the past couple weeks. we have moved to an area with lots of trees and bugs.  Where he has been scratching, we have noticed hair loss.  After bringing him to the vet, he was tested negative for demodectis mange.  We bought medicated shampoo and gave him a bath last night; however, last night it was the worste it has been.  I noticed redness and little bumps on his groin area.  I bought the D/Earth supplement and NuVet vitamins to try.  With these supplements, I should not give any other flea treatment, right?  I want to make sure.  He is on Heartguard but no other medications.

Answer
He has allergies; environmental to your new area.

Do not use a flea treatment until consulting with your vet.

There is oral pills for once a month flea treatment instead of the topical treatment. Talk with your vet.

Also, ticks can be problematic as well in the wooded area you are in now as well.

You will need to take him to the vet and get a prescription for the skin irritation before it becomes infected, and to relieve itching, etc.

The vet needs to prescribe oral medication for his environmental allergies using a best-guess-estimation of what it is due to what is in your immediate area.

This will NOT resolve itself. You can have him tested for what he is allergic too just as people are tested for allergies.

Secondary infections is highly possible at this point and can be life threatening if left undiagnosed and untreated.
