Question
Hi, my puppy is almost 2 months old now, and I'm curious if you know how to get him to stop biting me (hands and feet).  His teeth are sharp and have broken skin on my hands and feet.  When I get mad, I go into another room and close the door.  If I'm gone more then 1 minute he seems to pee on the carpet or poo somewhere he's not supposed to.  Almost seems like revenge.  I don't have a temper with him, nor do I hit him.
All his toys (rubber squeaky toy, knotted rope, squeaky plush toys, etc.) are made for him to bite and chew on.  Do you think their is another way for him to play that doesn't require biting?  I don't think he is too young to start training, but I haven't found any treats that interest him.

I've heard before that in an extreme case, you could restrict putting a bowl of food out for him, and make him earn his food.  Should I look into this as an option?  He is being crate trained when I'm at work and when I'm sleeping.  I come home for lunch everyday and even at breaks sometimes (I work next door) to check on him, or let him out for a run.  As he is still growing puppy fur, he can't stand the extreme cold temperature right now to go outside to potty.  Should I look into training lessons, or wait until he's a bit older?  He also uses his cage as a bathroom.  He doesn't make much noise when he want's out to go potty.  I have to sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and take him out of the cage myself to get him to go (without him asking).  *sigh* Oh the joys of my first puppy!  He is a charmer though and makes me very happy.

Answer
Hi Robert,
Aaaawwwww...2 months old? Don't expect so much from the baby right now. He is already upset and missing his momma and littermates.
Re: the biting...he is teething right now and will be for the next several months as the baby teeth come in and then fall out to be replaced by regular teeth. Your right...those baby teeth are VERY sharp. He is going to bite things and of course you would prefer it not to be you. Keep his toy supply going. Rather than leaving him for biting you, begin by a sharp reprimand...NO!!! Right in his face. He will not only hear but feel the force of your word. If you leave and he responds by going potty...you will have started a habit that will occur everytime you leave the house for something. Try that and let me know how it worked.
Re: going potty in the crate....remember...he is a baby...give him about 8 weeks and he will stop going potty in the crate because he will not want to be confined with it. By no means withhold food as a punishment because he will never make the connection and it is mean as well as it would deny him all the nutrients he ESPECIALLY needs right now as a growing puppy.
Give your little guy a bit of time. I don't begin to expect good behavior responses until 3-4 months. This is the time they learn to feel shame. At 2 months they just need to learn you love them to help them in the missing of mom.
I hope this has been helpful.
Best Wishes...Lisa
