Hi Vanessa,

A female in season, will show bright red blood for about a week. There will be some swelling. By the second week, the swelling will be very pronounced and the blood will change to a thin pale color. It is now that she will be ready to breed. She will have this breeding window for 3-5 days. You can also tell by her behavior when she is ready and for how long. She will be more playful with the male in her eagerness. Until she is ready it is best to keep the male away because he will want to and she will fight him and may cause him injury.
