Question
I have a 13 week old Boston terrier and lately he has been making a hacking noise like he wants to cough up something.  He mostly does it in the morning.  He has only coughed up something 2 times, it looked white and mucusy.  He is always chewing on things and I usually get it out of his mouth before he swallows it.  I took him to the vet and he said as long as he is keeping his food down and eating and drinking good he should be ok.  Do you have any suggestions what I can do to help him.  I feed him Eukanuba small breed puppy food.

Answer
Hi Amanda,  My first thought was that your puppy has kennel cough, because a hacking cough (sometimes described as a cat trying to cough up a hair ball) is one of the symptoms.  And the symptoms of kennel cough is usualy more noticeable in the mornings.

However beings you wrote that your vet did diagnose kennel cough, then I must assume that you dog doesn't have any of the other symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, green mucus coming from the nose.  If you notice any of the other symptoms I mentions, I suggest that you contact your vet again and let them know.

If kennel cough is not the problem, then possibly your puppy is eating too fast.  You can try feeding him smaller portions at a time and see if this helps.

Good luck and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.  Sincerely, Penny D.
