Question
Hello there.
My boston terrier started her season almost 3 weeks ago at the age of 7 1/2 months.  I first noticed a little spot of blood on our sofa which I thought had been from either my dog or cat cutting themselves but I couldn't see anything when I checked them.  The next day I noticed more blood dropping right beside her and after checking I knew she had started her first season.  She has swelling at the vaginal area and her nipples have swelled, I can't say if the swelling had started before the bleeding or not, I hadn't noticed  but she is also being very frisky with my husbands arm  The thing is, the vet told me that her season would last for 3 weeks, the bleeding should stop after about 2 weeks and the last week is the time when if allowed to she would fall pregnant.

Well it will be 3 weeks this Thursday and to be honest I'm a bit concerned because the bleeding hasn't stopped, the swelling doesn't seem to have gone down any on either her vaginal area or her nipples and the friskiness has got even worse - to the extent that she is becoming that excited that she is getting out of breath and she seems to  get a bit dilirious, we open the garden door to give her a bit of air as she's panting so much and she then runs like a greyhound down to the bottom of the garden (110 feet) and charges back.

Is this normal and when will it be safe to allow her with other males and not get pregnant.

Answer
Hello Janet, Well, the vet did give you the correct info...
She did go into heat young.  That may be why she is not on the usual schedule of other dogs.  Next, heat should be more predictable.
Just keep her away from the Boys for another week....
BEST wishes.
