Question
I am the one that has the Boston that I want to breed, you answered a question for me about 2 weeks ago. She is in heat now, but my boy doesn't seem interested, he has never breeded with a dog. Is there anything I can do to help them? Thank you

Answer
Hi Janice.  Unless your male dog has a medical condition preventing him from being attracted to your female, when it's time he will become interested.

The females heat cycle lasts for approximately 21 days.  During the first 7 days (when bleeding is first evident) the your female will not be interested in mating and will snap at the male if he approaches her. At first, this behavior can be confusing to a young male that has no previous mating experience, and he can sometimes lose interest in her.

However, during the second 7 - 9 day period, when your female is in the Estrus stage of the heat cycle (The vaginal discharge is more yellowish than bloody) your female's attitude towards the male will change. She will actually begin to flirt with the male, and encourage him to mate by positioning herself in front of him.

Normally, is all it takes for the male to understand what he needs to do. :)

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.  Sincerely, Penny D.
