Question
Hello,
I have an older cat (about 21 years old) and he has had 3 episodes over the last 6 months with include the following symptoms (late at night)...
Loud meowing with unusual howling sounds, and then all of a sudden he will start severe spasms, and pees at the same time. We pick him up and hold him and he see just seems totally limp and curled up. This lasts for about 1-2 minutes, then he starts panting, which lasts about 2-3 minutes. Then he seems fine, just weak and walks around looking confused. Just when we think we should take him to the emergency room, the symptoms end.
He is still eating and still plays a little bit.
We took him to the vet about a year ago, because he drinks a lot of water and urinates a lot too. We were told that he does have kidney disease. The vet said because of his age, it doesn't make sense to do any type of treatment.
Are these symptoms that he is having now related to this?
We do realize that he is old, and it's very unusual that he has lasted this long, but we don't want to put him to sleep if it's not necessary.
Just wanted to know if you have heard of these types of symptoms.

Answer
Vicki,

First of all, congratulations on such superior care that your Himalayan has made it to 21 years of age.

It seems to me that your kitty is having seizures.  As long as he is in no discomfort, I would not worry about it.

In the longer term, the kidney disease will create various symptoms, some of which can include what your cat is experiencing.

When the quality of life of your kitty has deteriorated to the point where he gets depressed, then you may want to consider putting him to sleep.  Until then, just take it one day at a time.

Best regards... Norm.
