Flea bite allergy/pink eruptions

Question
My nearly 14 year old dog has two skin problems.  She appears to have an allergic reaction to flea bites.  She chews and sratches until her skin is raw and bloody.  She also has these little pink bumps erupt that she chews and scratches also until bloody.  (This has been happening since last summer after she had a large tumor removed.  Not all of it was removed but it hasn't come back.)  I bathe her quite often with flea soap but didn't yesterday - just used regular soap - because of her open wounds.  What can I do for her?

Answer
If she is biting from a reaction to fleas, she needs treatment with something to soothe her skin.  We usually use a shot of cortisone to quiet the inflammation. The bumps are probably a skin infection, which is very commonly found when there is allergic skin disease.  A course of antibiotics will help kill the bacteria and calm the itching from the infection.  In addition, you should be using a flea medicine like Frontline TopSpot or Advantix once a month to kill any fleas that get on the dog.  These are available from your vet.
