Question
Hi, question for suspected respritory infections in possums, I heard ampicillin is best to use? Is this correct, if not which antibiotic is best to use? I heard Baytril which is used in smaller rodents for that is not a good choice as it is too strong of one for them. This is coming from a rehabber also, BUT I normally do not do possums. Just need the right antibiotic to give, nothing bad at all, just suspected on my part want to use one to be sure since this guy is young, we do not have many knowledgable vets in my area and cant seem to find much info about it, Thanks!

Answer
I raised opossums for over 10 years and never had one with any respiratory illnesses so I have never used any on them. I am guessing that Amoxicillin, or ampicillin is safe enough. They are not multi-stomached animals so this shouldn't be an issue.

Baytril doesn't work that great for lung infections anyway. I have just done a exhaustive research on this and can't find anything either. If you have a another wildlife rehab in your area you might want to call them. My books on rehab are all at home and I am not.
