Golden Retriever hot spot

Question
I am presently dog sitting for a 7 year old golden retriever.  He appears to have an open wound on his neck - owners indicate it is called a "hot spot".  Although it does not appear to be causing any pain - it looks very red and irritated.  Should I be taking this dog to the vet?  Is there anything I should apply to the area?  How do I care for this sore?

Answer
Hot spots are caused by allergic skin disease. The best thing to do for it is to shave the area, keep it clean with soap and warm water, and use some steroids (usually a shot) to keep the inflammation down.  You should let the vet diagnose and treat this lesion.
