My 12 Year old Wheaten Terrier

My 12 year old Wheaten, Murphy, has developed a hostile behavior (growls, attempts to bite) when approached, even by me.  This has occurred three times and the vet believes Murphy is in pain but we are unable to "prove" this by x ray or blood work.
The behavior occurs randomly, it appears, and goes away within hours and then Murphy is happy and playful.  Have you ever seen this?  What should I do next?

Hi- Yes, I think your vet is correct with the opinion of possible pain.  We can try some healthy choices with supplements... It can't hurt and they are good for his entire system.
