Question
My cat has food allergies and ibd.  I have been giving her prescription hills z/d and prednisone.  She is now off the prednisone and having a hard time. I also need to change up her food because she gets food intolerance even to foods she is okay with.  What is an alternative to prescription hills CANNED z/d diet (that I can alternate with every 3-6 months)? What is an natural alternative to prednisone?

The answer isn't in finding a natural substitute for steroids, although Licorice Root Extract is that; the answer is in putting your dear friend on the correct diet.  I am not sure where you are located, but if there is a natural pet store or health food store near you that carries a frozen raw food diet for cats (there are several good ones out there). Barring that, I would highly recommend a grain-free food from Solid Gold called Indigo Moon combined with either their enzyme, pro-biotic and trace mineral supplement "Sea Meal" or some other enzyme and pro-biotic supplement. Enzymes and pro-biotics are absolutely essential for your kitty's issues. They occur naturally in a raw food diet, but supplementing a quality grain free, natural food is excellent as well.

If you would like to fix your own raw diet, I would highly recommend a book by Kymythy R. Schultze called Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats (The Ultimate Diet). It is great reading and has menus.

Also, there are other things to look at: 1) if you are feeding your friend out of plastic bowls, switch to stainless steel, glass or ceramic. 2) If you have been giving your cat vaccines: stop immediately and don't even consider it in the future as they are one of the main causes of allergies, epilepsy, cancer, ibd, etc. 3) If you are using a chemical type of flea treatment of the spot on the back or pill type..stop immediately.  Toxins have to come out somewhere, and the furthest waste organ from the vital organs is the skin.

By the way, it may interest you to note that vets are required to take ZERO credit hours in nutrition in college, and the information they get is from the Hills Science Diet company (along with initial discounts for stocking the products when they go into practice).
