Answer
Hello Petra, I am so sorry your Maltese has GME - For the readers it is called Granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis (GME)-
As you know the future for your little one is not good at all.  I am sure they must have explained that your gal has less than a year, if that....?
The treatments we have are all related to reducing the inflammation on the brain areas.  The prednisone is one of the only things that modern medicine has to help reduce the swelling.  YOU can add a probiotic paste or powder to her meals.  It may help her belly because she is also on antibiotics.

Some good food ( holistic, if possible ) and LOTS of love is about all you can do for her.  I am so sorry that I can not help this little one.  Wish I could do more for you two!

This disease or condition:

GME is an acute, progressive inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) of dogs.  GME is a common differential for dogs that are affected by focal or diffuse neurological diseases.  An inflammatory disease like GME can cause severe and often irreversible damage to the CNS.

Please just keep your chin up and give her the best care and love you can.  Make her days as full and wondeful as possible.
