Question

ufo on green mushroom
Hello again and thanks for all your previous help. We  purchased a mushroom rock from a local pet store yesterday and there is a few ufos on it that even the clerk could not identify. There is this stuff that looks like chocolate and vanilla swirled  pudding. It  feels hard. There is also a few holes in the rock that have  striped antenaes coming out of it. Sorry if the pic is unclear. Thank you, Amanda

Answer
Hi Amanda. First the easy question. The striped antennae coming out of the rock are most likely the tentacles of a spaghetti worm. These are typically orange or yellow with dark stripes. The actual worm hides in the gravel or rock crevice and sticks its hair like tentacles out to capture small particles floating buy in the current. I have tons of these in my tank and they reproduce rapidly in an aquarium. They are harmless and beneficial filter feeding scavengers and not a cause for concern. Your fudge swirl ice cream looking creature is something I am not sure about. Possibly an encrusting coral of some sort or possibly just part of the rock that your coral is on. The picture is very unclear so it hard to see if it has a smooth surface or any holes or dimples in it. There are tons of different encrusting corals out there and a true identification may never be found. Google images(encrusting corals) to see if you can find anything that very closely resembles your ufo!
