Question

coral?
about 5 weeks ago i purchasedand setup a sw nano, about 10 gallons when i purchased the rock it came with a cream coloured hard coral- need identification from this and i have removed the fish from my tank which i found in the lake. my ph is sitting on 8.0,nitrate 12.5mg/L,nitrite at 0.1mg/L and amonia at 0.0 mg/L and i am starting to think about getting my first fish which im planning is a blue damsel. my lfs said i do not need lighting if i have only fish but i do if i want coral-will my unidentified coral survive without lighting.here is the picture of the coral.sorry if it is bad quality as i took it with my webcam :P

Answer
Hello Tom,

I can not tell if it is coral or not.  Can you see 'polyps' or litle hairs or fuzzy's sticking out all over?

Is it hard, does it have 'flesh', if you take it out of the tank, does it get slimey, or does it stink real bad, worse then the rock???

I would not worry about it if it is or isnt really.  You bought rock, you got rock...

I would concentrate on keeping those parameters good, and keeping fish alive.

I would also advise against the blue damsel.  they are cute and colorful, but they are territorial and bossy, and wil boss everyone around...

Maybe think of a clownfish, or small gobies... for now...

Good luck and let me know how things work out for you.

(I would keep an eye open for used metal halide light or t5.   (they make a VIPER lighyt in 70 watts that would be very cool over a smal tank like yours.)
