Question
why would my salt levels be rising ?

Answer
Hello Tom,

your salt levels could be rising because you keep adding salt water when the water level drops???

Salt water does not evaporate.  Only fresh water.  So, as your tank evaporates water everyday, you need to add fresh water.  You should do this daily to avoid salinity swings.

Even if you are adding fresh water like you should, over time, (like years, salt levels could rise due to dosing of calcium/kalkwasser and other additives.  But, that is usually over a long period of time, and we usually check out water more often and make corrections.

I would also suggest you calibrate your salinity meter/guage.  You can do it several ways.  You can take your device, to the lfs and compare to thiers and note if yours is higher or lower then thiers, or you can compare to several friends and get a feel of where your readings are.

if you have a spectrometer, you can buy calibration fluid, (53 ms/ 35ppt)  which is the same level as your tank should be.  (some folks use distilled water, but, that only calibrates the device on one end of the scale, and it can be way off on the other end)

Good luck and let me know what you determine.
