Question
55gal
55gal
QUESTION: Hello, my question is how long do i have to wait before i can transfer from my other tank that is leaking?  right now i have a 55gal set-up already for almost 7 months it starting to leak now so i set-up a 75gal and i have about 100lbs of live that was curing for 3mons and i have a five gal bucket full of live sand i put everything in the tank and also took one of my fuval(have two) off the 55gal and put in the 75gal.  i did take some sand from the 55gal bedding and put it on top of the sand bed in the 75gal it's been running for a week and i did one 30% water change, i have a dripping system(kalkwasser&reef builder) on the 75 I do testing almost every other day my readings now are PH-8.6, Salinity-1.023, nitrate-0, nitrite-0, calcium-400, temp-78, Alk-don't have test kit.  So how long do i have to wait?  I also was going to put 30% of the water from the 55gal into the 75gal is this okay or not?

ANSWER: Hello Caleb,

It would be nice to know what corals and stuff you are planning on moving and how big they are.

My guess is the corals that were in the leaking tank werent 'matured' or established in that tank.  (you only had it for 7 mnths)

I would move everything already.

I would not want to risk having to lose everything should the old tank leak worse tomorrow, for fear that the new tank isnt ready.

Keep in mind that when you buy corals from lfs and other places, they dont acclimate and or care or worry about the things we do...

But as long as you have some matured / cured rock and sand, and your parameters are good I would start moving stuff.

Good luck

let me know how things work out for you.

QUESTION: Thank you for answering my question.  One more thing should i put the water from the 55gal into the 75gal or leave it the way it is?

Answer
Hello Caleb,

I would use some or a lot of the water from your old tank.  (Unless you know of some not so good critters i that tank)

But anything you can do to minimize the 'shock' of new wter or potential differences between the new and old water is a good thing.

(If i trusted the water from my lfs, i would dump the water and animal into my tank, but because i dont trust it, i dilute it with new tank water to minimize the shock/transition)

good luck, and let me know how things work out for you
