Question
Our 120 gal. tank is 6 months old and recently after adding some new live rock I noticed this red slimy stuff with lots of bubbles gathering under it.  It is spreading.  We do the water changes regularly, have a fluval FX5, 4 - 65 watt compact bulbs.  I've seen lots of pictures of cyanobact. but never with the bubbles -- that's why I am writing.  We do not have an RO system and treat our tap water for changes.  I have been scraping, but can't seem to eliminate the growth.  Please advise.

Answer
Hello Lisa. Sometimes bubbles can get trapped in the red slime algae. What you are seeing is cynobacteria. Belive it or not it usually happens when a tank is about six months old! I have battled this organism many times and I always win. Usually a tank that does not have a lot of current will grow a lot more slime algae than a more turbulent one. I have found that the best way to rid it from you tank is by using a treatment of Chemiclean.Get yourself some of this and use it exactly according to the directions. It is safe and I have used it in reef tanks housing some pretty sensitive corals and it has worked every time.
