High Magnessium in my reef

Question
I do not have any stoney corals in my reef. I have a couple of small sponges and a few soft corals. I can get you an inventory soon if that would help figure this out. Could the Mag. hurt my anenomes? I just now am really getting them to thrive.

Thanks
Christy

Question -
The mag. in my aqurium in about 1600 ppm. I have read that it only needs to be about 1300 ppm. All my other levels are good and have been steady for about 2 years. The mag. just slowly keeps rising. I do a 20% water change every 4 to 6 weeks and have a very steady maintence routene. My fish and inverts.  look good and my carpet aninome split for the first time last month. Will the high mag. hurt anything and if so how do I lower it safely.
Any help would be appreciated.

Chrisy

I get my water tested by the city every 6 months and do water tests at home every week. They both read the same levels.

Chrisy,

This one is out of my league.  I agree 1300 ppm is a standard measurement.  I have never dealt with a increasing Mag.  I was intially going to tell you to check your water source but you do that every 6 months.  I looked through some of my text books and could not find you an answer.

Give me a couple of days I can ask some of my colleagues at Umass.  Do you have a of stony corals in your system.
Let me know. I am sorry that i could not help.  I will try to get you a better answer.
Todd

Answer

Christy,

I have had little luck.  No one has gave me the impression that high mag will harm inverts or your fish.  i told eveyone your system is thriving.  soft corals can be delicate to an inbalance of mineral content but yours seem to be fine. anenomes can be fickle. again your carpet has split which tells me your system is fine.

let me have an list of your inhabitants i will pass that on when i go to biology dept wed.

thanks
