Salt water

Question
Hi,

This is proberly the most stupid question you have had. I'm setting up a salt water fowlr nano tank. Tanks is still on order atm but just Reading up on everything to get ready. My question is how do I get/make/buy salt water? I know I can get a ro unit but don't think that's going to be a option as parents reluctant to mess around with tap system etc, my dad has a large tropical aquarium and he makes his water by boiling tap water and leaving in tubs for a week to two. I wondered if it's possible for me to boil water in kettle for amount needed and use some form of treatment solution and leave in sealed tubs? And add salt mix? I would need to get addition heater to warm water. As I say this is proberly the most stupid questions you've had. Thanks for you're time, lee

Answer
Hello Lee,

and no, i dont think this is a stupid question or at least not the most stupidest... heheheh

and i have been asked this before... several times.. so you are not alone.

you can get salt water from LFS, local fish stores, but it is really expensive.. usually a $1 a gallon or more depending on your LFS

you can make your own by mixing REEF salt with clean water....   you can boil the water, or let it sit over night to get rid of the clorine, as clorine is the big issue..

tap water has other issues though that will have a negative affect on your tank, that is, it may contribute to algae growth...

you can get an RO/DI filter for cheap now adays, and you can getr adapters to hook up to your garden hose when you want...

the ro/di unit will make life easy for you and your fathers tank... no more boiling an storing of water...  not having to plan ahead to do maintenance, and or not have water when you are ready to do the maintenance.

the BEST THING I EVER BOUGHT was the ro/di filter... life was easy again...

I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU GET THAT.. if not at the beginning, then within the first year...

I also suggest you join my new forum at www.thelittleocean.com  and introduce yourself there, as i ahve several other members there that came from here recently

good luck and please keep me posted
