Question
hello,
i have a 2000l saltwater tank with soft and hard corals(elegance corals,evil finger,leather coral,colt coral,mushroom and hammer coral)and one anemone.the supplements i use are(calcium,magnesium, strontium,iodine and trace elements) i add these once a week.
12% of the tank water is refreshed monthly.
the corals are target fed with aquamedics twice a week..i use PLANCTO..
my question is:which is better to use : PLANCTO or KENT phytoplankton and zoo-plankton...and if PLANCTO is good do i have to continue to use aquamedics or are supplements enough?
thank you very much

Answer
Hi Emi,

If this were my tank, I'd refresh the water 2x monthly.  More nutrients come in with the salt, than we add, really...so this is a great way to assure a spotless marine environment, whether we skim or not.

My opinion is Plancto is a very good product, exhuding less waste into the water than regular plankton does.  Kent also has a great product.  I would choose which one suits my corals the best by using each for 2 weeks, and then making that decision.  You might even dose with one, one week, and the other the next.  That way, they get a well-rounded diet, as both contain different strains of plankton and organisms.

You do need to continue the aquamedics and you need to feed the nem.  People often state that they don't need to feed anemone, well, just because they "can" live in a tank off of minute little bits of food, doesn't mean it's an appropriate way to keep them, and in the wild they do eat about every 2 to 3 days.

I advise feeding the nem, if you're not now.  I didn't see it mentioned. :)

Have a great day and I hope this is helpful for you, Emi.  It must be delightful to have a 5000L tank!  Nice.

Happy fish-keeping.
