salt-water aquarium

Question
I would love to start a salt-water aquarium, but I don't trust my local fish stores in giving me the right information on how to start one up and keep one running sucessfully. All they seem interested in is me buying more things. I would just like to know (if you have the time) what it takes to start a tank and keep one running. Also if there are any good books or sites I should take a look at to give me more information. Also about how much time goes into keeping one successfully. thanks

Answer

Hello,

You will need the following
Tank (20-55 gallons)
Stand
Instant Ocean salt Mix
Marine test kits
Net, bucket and Food
Lighting 3 -5 watts per gallon
two power heads(one is a must) Aqua clear is good
Good filter system this will depend on budget Plan on spending 50-75 dollars.  Filter needs to filter about 150-300 gallons per hour.
heater 3-5 watts per gallon
cured Live rock 2 pounds per gallon this will aid in filtration.
Hydrometer to measure salinity
tap water conditioner
active carbon and filter floss material.

A good book is the marine handbook. Or the Idiots guide to marine set-ups.  That is a my favorite.
Plan on spending about $300-400.00 dollars.
Fishgeeks.com is a great site.

Always check your water quality. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, ph of 7.8-8.1 and .1 nitrate will keep your fish alive and kicking.  Change 10% of your saltwater on a weekly basis.

I gave you a lot of information read though this and
please get back to me I do not mind guiding you through the whole process.
God luck Todd
