Question
I have a very new salt water aquarium, months and have white growth on rocks looks like small white pulp, there are now some on my leather and they seem to be killing it.  Are these bad, if so how do I get rid of them?

Answer
Hello Marybeth,

I will need more information about your tank/system...

How big of a tank, what lighting, what filtration, power heads for circulation? and how much rock/sand....

What critters/fish/coral you have

I would also like some information on your maintenance routine, and what the water peratmeters are...

salinity = ?
Nitrate = ?
Nitrite = ?
Ammonia = ?

And if you have the followoing tests..

ALK = ?
Calc = ?

Im not sure if this 'white pulp' is growing on the rock/leather or if is just accumulating there?  Can you blow it off, with like a turkey baster or a wave of the hand???

It is normal for new tanks to go thru 'wierd' stages at the beginning, which is why the 'normal' for setting up a tank is about a month for fish, and much longer for corals / inverts / etc...

Laathers are relatively more 'hardy' then a lot of stuff, but part of the process for starting up a tank, is not so much getting hte tank ready for a reef, but for the reefkeeper to get ready as well..

You should come by my new forum at www.thelittleocean.com

We have a lot of new reef keepers, and a forum for them, and you to post questions on new reef aquariums...  you can post stuff about your aquarium there, or maybe read thru  the many other discussions that may sound similar to yours, (although i dont reacall any at the momement)

Please let me know as much information I need above to help you and we can continue the discussion then

Till Then....
