starfish and mushroom compatability

Question
i'm pretty sure i know the answer but i wanted to check. about three months ago i purchased a live rock with a variety of mushrooms attached to put in my 55 gallon aquarium. i have had a chocolate chip starfish in the tank for a couple of years. there didn't seem to be a problem with the starfish eating the mushrooms but the last couple of days the starfish has been hovering over the live rock with the mushrooms, which retract at night and come out when the light is on. is it that the starfish did not detect the mushrooms for the first three months and when found now will devour them all? i realize that little is known about starfish eating habits but any insight you have would be helpful. i like having the starfish in the tank. it appears healthy and does not seem to interfere with other livestock in the tank.

Answer
Hey Jonathan

Unfortunately, chocolate chip stars are not reef safe, and they will devour lots of corals. sounds like he now has a taste for mushrooms in your tank.

i would worry about him touching other corals in your tank. your best options would be to remove all corals if you only have a few, or if you have quite a few corals it would be best to rehome the starfish before he eats more corals
