starfish--eating itself

Question
I have a sarfish and he looked funny yesterday, the ends of his tenticles were all gone and now they looked like they are all cut off. I can see that it is eating them off, and there are pieces of tenticles on the bottom of the tank ---------i thought the yellow tang was eating him, but i can see it is eating itself????

I have never seen this before. I will have to research on this a little. Also if I have taken to long to answer, please accept my apologies, if you have received an answer from someone else please if you don't mind let me what it is that happened, so if this ever comes up again I can help shed some light on the issue.
