Lighting upgrades

Question
I've got a fish-only saltwater tank that I am going to be adding an anemone and some green polyps to. Currently, I just have standard fluorescent lights, with about 40 Watts for a 55 gallon tank. I know that I am going to have to upgrade that to about 200 W. The canopy that is on the tank (non-negotiable) only has about 5 inches of clearance for the lightset, so I won't have much room to offset the lights, so I am concerned about heat buildup. I currently have a small fan running in the canopy to prevent heat buildup. Do you recommend metal halide, VHO, or PC lighting? Can I put any of these lights in that canopy without putting too much of a heat burden on the tank? Will I need to add more fans?

Answer
Jim,

I would go with the metal halide lamp because of the anemome
and polyps. These guys need strong light.  Heat is always a problem so I would look at a halide lamp that can be mounted on the tank without the canopy if possible.  VHO lighting is great because it does not heat up like halides and it less $$. Again with 5 inches of clearance it may be a bit tough.

I am picturing this canopy and I think you could do VHO in the canopy with a fan. you would need at 150-200 watts for this 55 gallon.

Also I have seen metal Halides for about $220 that can be clipped on the side of a tank. They have internal fans and a ballast with them. I have an Orbit mount-on with 200 watts VHO  with 1 20000K Metal Halide.
I have three internal fans on it.  Go to doctor fosters pet web site thay have a lot of lighting options I think the canopy will make it hard to get 100% perfect lighting. But with a little luck it can be done any thing let me know.
