cycling a new tank

Question
I have a 45 gallon corner tank, 2 inches of crushed coral as substrate, 10 pounds of live rock, a rena xp2, prizm skimmer (not running yet) and temp of 78 degrees. The tank was filled with RO water.

The tank ran for two weeks with the rock, added two damsels two weeks ago. My PH is still at 7.8 regardless of how much buffer 8.1 I have added. Ammonia is still at 0.

The buffer is supposed to raise the daytime PH to 8.1 - 8.3. I thought there would be some ammonia action by now.

Am I doing something wrong?

Answer
your doing great so far! you just should get another 40 or so pounds of live rock because every time you add more live rock your tank goes through a mini cycle. also i would suggest adding some sand to your substrate just in case you get any substrate dwelling fish.

i would wait about a month before adding any more fish. as for ph buffer you get what you pay for, the more you spend the better it works. one bottle goes very far so it would be a good investment.
