Question
I'm new to this fish thing so help me out please.I bought a 2 gallon tank with a filter and every time I turn the filter on lots and lots of bubbles come out.The whole top of the tank is filled with bubbles.Whats wrong?I was also wondering if you could tell me how many times I should clean the tank and whats the best way to do that.I have a male betta fish

Answer
this is the salt water page so you may want to get a second opinion from a fresh water expert.

any way, i wouldn't worry too much about the bubbles, its a new filter and they cling to the inside of the casing, should sort its self out soon.

with regards to cleaning out your tank, i am guessing you didn't cycle the tank to start with. so i would buy a product called cycle or stress zyme, also get some water conditioner. follow instructions on the back of the bottle.
when you cycle the tank, this cultivates bacteria that digest harmful chemicals in the water. like phosphates, ammonia, nitrites, to get the nitrate low you must do weekly water changes of 10% of tank volume.

you should try and pick out any uneaten food as this will add to the bio load of the fish, try looking for an air powered vacuum. you should never empty the whole tank then add a whole new tank of fresh water. you will loose all of the good bacteria.

i would google fresh water cycling and do a bit of research on it.

hope that helps
Paul.
