Sump and refugium

Question
Hello tyler!

I want to make a small sump for my 25 gallon tank. I don't want too much, just a little one. Maybe 5 gallons.

But I have no idea how to do this. Can you please help?
What do I need? Does an overflow take up much room in a tank? How do I drill? Can you recommend a good book?

Also, about refugiums. I may instead or also do a 5 gallon refugium, but again I have little idea how to go about doing this. I would probably put in a little bit of refugium rubble, 10lbs of LS, and a ton of macro algae like cheato. How much lighting would I need? How do I get it working? Again, can you recommend a good book also?

Thanks!

Answer
Hey Bill

Ive found saltwater aquariums for dummies to be a good book. To be honest, i would go with a refugium for your 25g. sumps are needed on 55g+ tanks and with all the plumbing, a 5g would get pretty crowded.

If you do want do to it, you can drill it yourself, theres drill heads on ebay. However, most reef stores can drill it for a small price. Make sure your tank has non-tempered glass, if its tempered, the whole tank will shatter when its drilled. If it is tempered, you will need a overflow, it wont take up too much room. If you do make a fuge, i would have some rubble like you said, live sand, and chaeto. For lights, there are small 18w PC lights on ebay, but stores like home hardware have small clip on 18w PC lights that work too, and theyre only a few bucks.

This site has info on how to make refugiums, and you can also make a in-tank refugium, which is easier since you dont need a way to get water plumbed in and out of the refugium
