Question
I need an algae eater that would be safe to put in to a 55 gal. reef safe, with a rusle lion, v tail grouper, 3 stripe dansle and, cardinal.

Answer

Russells Lionfish
Hi cole robinson,

For saltwater reef tanks including (3 Stripe Damsels), and (Russells Lionfish)...

You may want to ask another expert regarding the Russells Lionfish, as I have never kept one of these. As I'm sure you already know the spines on the fins are poisonous, and if you are stung, the reaction will be similar to a bee sting only a little stronger or worse. For individuals who are allergic to various animal poisons it could be fatal.

Some advice I can give you is that most lionfish are not considered a fully reef safe aquarium fish, and that they may eat tank mates including ornamental shrimp and small fish. However it is documented that shallow reef tanks are acceptable environments for this fish.

You may want to separate the damsel and cardinal fish from the lionfish, because with time, if it gets hungry enough it may eat them.

*Regarding algae control, if you keep your lionfish well fed on a regular basis, you may be able to keep a few large snails and hermit crabs.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this.

Regards,
Dave
