Question
I bought 2 green chromises 2 days ago. Unfortunatly one died this afternoon. I'm pretty sure nothing is wrong with my tank because my salinity is 1.021 ppt and my nitrate is 4.0 ppm no nitrite and less than or equal to .5 ppm ammonia, since i noticed there was ammonia I started adding detoxifyer a week ago. My main problem is that the chromis that I have left is showing interest in the food but is not actually eating it. I am feeding him frozen mysis shrimp soaked in the parasite guard/ flavor enhancer, Garlic Guard. Can you please recommend some ways I can get him to eat and maybe why he is not eating. I also have a brittle sea star, a peppermint shrimp, a small hermit crab, and about 5 pounds of live rock in my tank. The inverts have had no problems what so ever and I am sorta stumped now. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hello Nick,

you say that nothign is wrong with your tank, but yet you are saying you have Nitrate and Ammonia.

both of those are not good nor are they normally found in an established tank.

Can you please tell me a bit more about your system... how old, what type of filters, lights and powerheads..

Also, if you can tell me how you do water changes and 'top off' water, and where you get the water, that would help me..

I will address your question about food, but think you need to review your tank and fine tune it to minimize the nitrate and ammonia without the use of detoxifier and other 'snake oils'

I would suggest trying different foods.  pellets, flake, live brine if need be...

Chromis are not normally 'finicky' and pretty much eat everything i feed them, so, either they really hate whatever it is you are feeding them or something else is going on..

anytways, let me know what you got going on and we can pick up from there.

good luck and hope to hear from you soon...
