New Aquarium - Which pump?

Question
Dear Nori,

I have just been given a large fish tank and three extra fish. That makes three fantails, two goldfish and two snails. With the possiblitlity of getting more smaller fish. My tank is 2.5 feet by 1.5 feet x1 foot. I'm not sure how many litres this is.

If possible, I would like some advice on what sort of pump or filter to buy. Idealy I would like one that filters the water and airs it at the same time. What sort of thing should I looking for and what are they called?

Please help me as I am in the dark and don't want my fish to be oxygen starved!
Thanks and best wishes,
Maudie

Answer
Hi Maudie,
Thank you for your letter. You can find everything you need to know for holistic aquarium care at my web page:
http://steamboats.com/aquarium.html
Check with your local aquarium supply shop for the hardware. You will need a filter (there are many types), an aerator (a little air motor with a tube and air stone or ornament at the end to diffuse the air in the tank), and a heater. While you're there, buy a bottle of "Cycle," friendly bacteria (keep it in the refrigerator between use), and a syphon vacuum.
The sales people at your local aquarium shop will help you choose the right items for your size tank.
Print out my web page for future reference. The worst pitfall is over feeding, so follow the instructions about feeding.
Write back if you want to discuss further.
