Question
QUESTION: I have two betas and I am trying to breed them. My male made a bubble nest and my female got very plump. So i thought it might be time to breed them so far i put them in there and they have been fight well my male beta George is attacking her. I would like to know if that common and is it a good chance she and him will mate.

ANSWER: Hello Kami.

If you find that the male is being too aggressive rather than wanting to spawn. Take him out and don't let him see the female for about another 2 days. I also recommend that you get a tank divider so they will be able to see each other but they can't have physical contact. You can buy tank dividers from most pet shops. They are just plastic and there is a clear piece of plastic with small holes in it, which will separate them.

I find that these work well.

How big and old is your female? Is she the same size as George? Does she try to get close to him and he attacks her? If she is injured take him out and put a anti-bacterial remedy in with her so she can heal.

I tried for months for my fighting fish to breed and I worked out what I did wrong and what I did right. Do you have plenty of floating plants? And very bushy plants like Limnophila aquatica. She will need plenty of places to hide so make sure you have heaps of hiding places for her.

I don't think it will take long for your bettas to spawn. just use that tank divider and he should calm down more.

Let me know of any other questions because I have bred Betta Splendens before. I have babies right as we speak!

QUESTION: hello,
I took my male out because he was being very aggressive. Harden is not the same size as George, she is much smaller, but I read that when you buy fish from the store they are 6 months old so they should be mature. She has a big belly so that means she has eggs in there and he did make a bubble nest. She did go by him then he went to attack her many times. Before this i had two tanks right next to each other so they could see each other. Everything seemed like it was working but I guess not.  The tank I had them two in had a plant so she could hide. If you could give me more info that would be great. When i don't let the male see the female for two days what will that do?
Thanks alot Kami

ANSWER: Take George away for a day or two so he can't see the female. Leave the female where she is and get a tank divider to go in the middle. After a few days are up, put George back with the female but on the opposite side so he can't attack her, but so he can see her.

Get something that he can built his nest under, like a Lilly pad or something similar. Do you have filtration? If you don't just get a cheap corner filter, if you do, don't have any filtration up high because it will stress them out too much and damage the bubble nest.

When you re-introduce them, watch them so they don't get hurt. Make sure you feed the female well so she can grow almost as big as the male.

By removing George it just calms him down and shows that he isn't going to mate with the female if he is aggressive. It will also give the female a break from him chasing her.

QUESTION: HI again
I'm sorry I have one more question about these betas.
So if i get this tank divider it will work you are saying, but I have looked at those and they are kind of small, they said they need room to spawn. I don't understand how that would work, because if he does make his bubble nest his area is so small to spawn. Thanks for your help

Answer
It depends how big your tank is. If your tank is 5 gallons it will be fine. All you do is put it straight down the middle to separate them for now, its only temporary. You will take it out for them to spawn and once the male is looking after the eggs you either, put in the tank divider or move her to another tank. He will become very aggressive towards her with the eggs. He will be the parent and he will look after the eggs until they hatch.

All the tank divider does is sections off the tank in half so the tank will be the same size its jut so they can't attack each other.

I can take a photo of my tank and the divider if you like.
