Is my dwarf blue gourami dying?

25 9:09:12

Question
Background: At age 47, I have found myself to be a new aquarist. I have a 47-gallon, tall tank that I set up about a month ago with a powerhead filter, heater set at 75-80 degrees F, and an air pump with two airstones.

I have been adding fish slowly as the tank cycles. My first three fish added three weeks ago were long-fin zebra danios that are doing fine. My second three fish added two weeks ago were male dwarf blue gouramis. My third three fish added one week ago were albino corydoras catfish.

One of my gouramis has become listless and stays near the bottom of the tank, except for a few trips up to eat now and then. He seems to be panting and doesn't seem to know where he is in the tank.  I first noticed this behavior right after I added the three corys.

Can you tell me if he is dying and if there is anything I can do to help him? Everybody else in the tank seems as happy as, well, clams.

Thanks for your help.  == John ==

Answer
Dear John
It might be a really good idea to test your water just to be sure ammonia and nitrites and nitrates are not too high since your tank is still cycling. Also,I had a problem with a gourami that was very shy and the only thing that helped was adding alot of plants and hiding areas. Sometimes other fish can be bullies so observe the others to see if he is being bullied by them. Fish will sometimes act sick when they are just scared. Hopefully, this is the case and he just needs to feel more secure.
Welcome to the fish hobby!
Hope this Helps!
