Stocking a 30 gallon

Question
Hi, I've got a 30 gallon tank (with live plants). So far I've got three dwarf gouramis (one male and two females) in there and plan to transfer my five black neon tetras and two otocinclus, and then end up with at least 9-11 black neon tetras and 4 otocinclus (no plans to add more dwarf gouramis).

Once that's all established and everything seems to be running smoothly, would there be room for any other species of (compatible) fish? I'm mainly confused about how much space otocinclus and dwarf gouramis eat up in a tank this size.

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Nicole.

There are a couple of problems with your stocking scheme.  How long have the gourmis been in there?  Generally you can have one male and one female and that is it.  if you have two of the same sex, they can become territorial.  Otos do not take up much bioload so don't worry about their number, but try to have about 5 in there, and don't add any until you have algae buildup.  I would not go with more than 9 or 10 neons, as they are about 1.5 inches and ten of those = aobut 15 inches, plus the 10 or so inches for the gouramis and the otos, i would say your tank will be fully stocked.  It is better to be slightly understocked than overstocked.  Sounds like a beautiful tank.
