Guppy dying

Question
QUESTION: Hello,I finally cycled my tanks and the fish have been doing well for a couple of weeks but now I have had a few deaths (guppies). All chemistry is good 0.0 on nitrates and ammonia. PH was a little low but everything else looks fine. The fish have no signs of illness or disease except for lying on the bottom of the tank and then a couple of days later they are dead. The only other thing they do is kind of shimmying. Please help.

ANSWER: Guppies tend to shimmy when they swim due to their big tails. I would guess the guppies were simply old. Unless of course there is a bully in the tank or one of the guppies is actual mean thus killing some of the others. If there is no signs of disease or parasites, chances are they were either old, which guppies dont live long anyways, or there is a bully in the tank. Probably nothing to worry about. But do keep an eye on the other fish to make sure it was not a disease or parasite. Including to make sure there is not a bully who is weeding out the pack. Let me know if you need more help.

QUESTION: Thank you very much. I feel a great deal better. Two days ago I added 2 neon gouramis and 2 rams to my 50 gal tank that cycled approx one month ago. They are not bothering the remaining guppies at all and are keeping to themselves. However, the guppies are now hanging out out the top of the tank in the middle. All chemistry remains at 0.0. Could it be that they need time to adjust to the new tank mates?
Thanks again for your help.

Answer
Well, honestly guppies probably feel very scared in such a big tank with such bigger fish, while they are not big to us they definately are to the guppies. You will have a super hard time adding any other fish other than the guppies or small neon like fish when you have the small guppies. I tried to add some guppies to my 30 gallon tank with smaller community fish and the guppies still were too small to be in there so I got a cute little 5 gallon, pleanty big for a few guppies, and they are having a ball in their own personal home. I would imagine even though you do not see it, the other new fish are definately expressing their dominance and perhap hunger for the little guppies. Even if the new fish do not bother, or seem to, the little guppies, the guppies know they are small and know fish see them as prey. In fact many people, not me, even use the guppies for feeder fish! I couldnt imagine doing that but the guppies are so small that they are actualy perfect for it. I would be risking the guppies if I left them in the big tank with other species. A 50 gallon probably makes the guppies feel super small and in danger. Perhaps you can get a cute little 5 or 7 gallon tank for them? I know some people think one tank is enough but I love to have one here and one there, I think it adds to the atmosphere and gives the proper species their safe homes. You can have all the different kinds of fish you want and not be worried about them not mixing if they are not suppose to. I hopeI have helped you some. Let me know if you need any more help. I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I usually get back the same day. Always happy to answer your questions!
