Brown-Orange Stinky Sludge Everywhere

Hi Alex, I have a 39 gallon Eclipse with two African Cichlids.  This is the second occurrence in a week where the ENTIRE tank is covered with a brown orange like stinky sludge.  It covers only the bottom of the tank but when water is moved, it goes everywhere in large clumps.  SMELLY too...  The tank is great one day, then completely covered the next day.  Need help I'm desperate.  My nitrates and nitrites are a bit high as well... Thanx for any feedback you can provide. :)

Well it sounds like a algae so doing a HUGE water change will help out nicely as it'll lower both your nitrates and nitrites immensely, those two (nitrates and nitrites) make algae grow crazily and can harm your fish so the only way to stop them is with a Bio-Wheel AND weekly water changes.
